Hmmmm my husband calls me crazy, my kids call me goofy girl or MAAA, but I like to think of myself as an artist.
I grew up in a small town where most women had June Clever syndrome. We became nurses, secretaries or school teachers and those jobs were very temporary. You only worked until you found a husband, bought a house, had children and lived happily ever after. WHO DOES THAT????? I grew up on the cusp of free love, bra burning and was an Art Major!!! ART MAJOR??? WHO DOES THAT? I love Art. I couldn't get enough!! My classes included drawing, painting, sculpture, Art History, any thing to do with the subject. Young and impressionable I listened to my elders when they asked... " What the hell are you going to do with a degree in Art? That's one Goofy Girl!!!"
So I did what was "right". I became a business major, worked for a bank, got married and had kids. Realizing I had taken a wrong turn on my road in life, I did a very sharp U turn and completely changed directions. I ended 25 yrs in the financial field and took some time to clear my head. HHHHMMMM I need to decide, what do I really wanted to do when I grow up. So I took a waitressing job and started to paint again!!! Being older and wiser, now I could listen to myself and do whatever I wanted. I want to paint. "MA, SHE'S CRAZY!!!!"
So I began to paint. I painted everything, paper, textiles, tiles, walls, furniture, murals, frames, clay pots…. You name it and I painted it. People started to ask me if I could paint for them. With my business background I decided I had better find a school for decorative painting since I would be using other peoples' homes as my "canvas". So I started taking classes. "Old World Finishes" class taught a technique intended to adhere antique maps to ceilings (who does that?!). It's such a beautiful technique; how can I apply this to something most people can afford without the structural commitment to a ceiling? And so I developed faux-fresco. The response I receive most is "I've never seen anything like that!" "That's the coolest thing I've ever seen!" "Now that's Art!" "You are truly an Artist"
Ahh yes, I am an Artist!!
